I'm changing the tag.
Five books I read recently:
The Lost Continent: Travels in Small Town America- Bill Bryson
After having lived in England for many years, Bill Bryson takes a road trip across America. His take on eighties America: hilarious, critical and affectionate.
Jeeves and the tie that binds-P.G.Wodehouse
I haven't really (ahem) read much Wodehouse. But fear not, I shall remedy this soon. And before you dismiss me as illiterate, know that I started with the wrong book (or so I'm told)- Eggs, Beans and Crumpets at age 12. I didn't really get it. And never bothered to pick up another Wodehouse until...now. No wait, I read a collection of Wooster/Jeeves short stories that was lying around at home some time last year. Ha, finally I know where my father got the "You look like something the cat brought in." from.
The Painted Word- Tom Wolfe
On Eye's recommendation. Best left to artists/ those who know lots about art. Wolfe does have a point, though.
Kitchen Confidential- Anthony Bourdain
Entertaining (and informative) account of how Bourdain managed to become a chef despite being high at most times on some illegal substance or the other.
No onions nor garlic- Srividya Natarajan
A tambrhahm herself, Natarajan makes merciless fun of her ilk. Gotta like it for that. Ought to have been about half its size, I think.
Five books I find unreadable:
One Hundred Years of Solitude- Gabriel Garcia Marquez
I've picked this one up twice and give up both times. It isn't as if I disliked it. I just... lost interest somewhere along the way.
Godel, Escher, Bach- Douglas Hofstadter
Full of mathematical concepts. 'Nuff said.
The Pickwick Papers- Charles Dickens
Too long.
Mansfield Park
Don't get me wrong, I love Jane Austen. But this one's as dull as its virtuous heroine.
A Farewell to Arms- Ernest Hemingway
Just don't like Hemingway
The Female Eunuch- Germaine Greer
Might've been revolutionary when first published, but I don't see what the fuss is all about. And Greer thinks women ought to taste their menstrual blood. Is she familiar with the concept of hygiene?
Now, Eyefry and Antickpix do this tag. Go on.

this wasn't there earlier was it?
sigh..can't really remember the last 5 books i've read. i read around 5 in a year.
so under-read.
Well Hi
its really surprising how these RSS readers get hold of all kinds of leads into new blogs
I suppose u vaguely remember a guy with my name way back from actech
- and hey, did u know what got me to post - i absolutely HATED 'One hundred years of solitude' too
cheers
Pix: Oh, come on. I bet you can come up with five.
Abhilash! Hi, of course I remember you! So what are you doing these days? And this blog is supposed to be (ahem) anonymous, how did you figure out it was me?
Glad to hear there are others who didn't like One Hundred Years much.
Um see, i used to store blog URLs on my yahoo notepad with a '-' followed by the name of the owner - last week i put in all the 30 odd into my RSS reader (the google one) and i guess urs happened to be amongst the few active ones :).
But make no mistake - it was listed - Nirajana.V - all right :) Maybe it was nicked from my old days on orkut
Read Eggs, Beans and Crumpets again. You have to.
Abhilash: Aha. That's how, huh? Always good to have new readers :)
Sophist: Yes, when I get my hands on it in May (hopefully)
I've already listed out the last few books I've read on my blog, spread over the last five or six posts. Give me another one. I don't mind doing a set of movies...
P.S. Read Hemingway's short stories. They're master-classes in precision of prose. You can't just dismiss him based on Farewell To Arms.
i was thinking abt modifying the book tag to a movie one actually.
and, while i found sun also rises quite dreary, loved farewell to arms. however, only thing of his i was able to read. old man and the sea is also a bit torturous.
Eye: Oh yeah, so you did. List of five favourite bookstores? (I might do that myself, hmm) Or movies. Anything you feel like.
Took a dislike to Hemingway after reading one of his short stories. The one about a boy mixing up the celsius and the fahrenheit scales and thinking he's going to die of fever. Supposed to be humour. Bah. I've tried reading A Moveable Feast as well, but didn't finish it.
Pix: Maybe I should attempt it again, hmm...
how come 'the god of small things' by arundhati roy isn't there?
that crap was exceptional. :P
Anon: I didn't have trouble reading God of Small Things. I quite liked it, too.
