I think I'm going to rename this blog 'Ennui', to reflect state of mind. I like idea, you?

This morning's experiments have revealed that my ineptitude as regards the culinary arts is greater than previously suspected. For the first time in my life, I tried to use that useful invention, the pressure cooker.

In went the dal, the water, the turmeric, the lid shut and the heat turned on. With bated breath (for fear that cooker would explode in my face) I waited for the steam to escape, and with open mouth I watched the cooker spew instead, a foot high spout of turmeric-water. For three whole minutes. Have I ever mentioned that we use an electric stove? A pool of the cooker-emanate has now collected under the coil.

Diagnosis: More substance than my tiny cooker can handle. Ah. Worse things have happened. I know someone who blew a hole in his cooker. This may well happen to me of course, as I'm sure you're convinced. My mother, when she finds out, in all certainty bang her head against nearest wall, wondering how she (of all people), could've spawned this clumsy oaf.

I'm still exhausted from interminably long flight back. Never, never, ever again fly US Airways. Or as a friend wisely added, any American airline if I can help it. US Airways has the most unhelpful staff, the fattest, most over-the-hill air-hostesses who beat the ones in Indian Airlines in rudeness. And if transiting through Frankfurt, do it via Lufthansa. That way, won't have to go through security check, or be relegated to some god-forsaken corner of the airport where even the airline staff don't like to go.

It's 6 deg C outside. Which for January is not bad at all, but it still means that I have to get into layers and layers of clothing before I step outside. The fact that it's probably 25 deg C in Madras doesn't help.

No campus shuttles till the undergrads return on the 18th. No cafeteria either. How am I to buy grocery, return my books to the library and eat lunch? Fucking undergrads.

It's awful to be back. And er, yes, happy new year.
